Epilepsy

It is an answer to an abnormal discharge in the brain.
The term epilepsy describes several experiences that may not be the same as seizure. Two thirds of the population that experience an attack never have others again.
The third part has recurring attacks (a condition called epilepsy).
What happens during an attack depends on the fact that part of the brain is affected. The discharge can wrap a very small part of the brain being able to be triggered by some type of aura (notice) smell or taste, vision, deep feeling, etc.

  • Partial crisis.
  • Jacksonian crisis.
  • Complex partial crisis (psychomotor).
  • Generalized crisis.
  • Children's spasms.
  • Tonicochonic crisis (great evil).
  • Acinetic crisis.
  • febrile seizures.
  • epileptic status.

These vary depending on the type of seizure that arises:

  • Partial crisis: It begins with specific motor or sensory disorders, without loss of consciousness, preceding a generalized or complex crisis.
  • Jacksonian crisis: Focal motor symptoms, begin in one hand or one foot and then cover the entire limb, there is loss of consciousness, and generalized convulsive movements.
  • Generalized partial crises: mostly patients have a loss of contact of one to two minutes with the environment that surrounds it.Initially, involuntary movements and emit unintelligible sounds.Does not understand what is told and can resist help, mental confusion continues one to two minutes once the crisis has passed
  • Generalized crisis: The person experiences temporary loss of consciousness, severe muscle spasms, shaking of the whole body, grinding of the teeth, feeling of turning the head and loss of bladder control.
After the crisis the person is with a headache, mental confusion and extremely tired; They usually do not remember what happened during the crisis.
  • Crisis of absence (Petit badly): They manifest for loss of consciousness of 10 to 70 seconds, with an eye or muscle flutter at a rhythm of three seconds and can lose muscle tone. The patient abruptly suspends any activity that he is doing and resumes it after the crisis; It predominates in children.
They are frequent during exercise;Between both seizures the patient is totally normal.
  • Children's spasms (salutatory crisis): It is characterized by abrupt flexion of the arms, bending forward of the trunk and extension of the legs. It lasts a few seconds but usually repeats several times a day.
  • Tonicochonic crisis (great evil): They can begin with a partial aura of epigastric discomfort, followed by a cry, the crisis continues with loss of consciousness, fall and tonic and then clonic contractions of the muscles of the extremities, the trunk and head.
There may be urinary and rectal incontinence, the crisis lasts usually 2 to 5 minutes. After the crisis the patient may experience alterations of mood, deep sleep, headache and muscle.
  • Epileptic status: motor, sensitive or psychic crises are followed with each other, without intermediate periods of recovery of consciousness. The epileptic status of great evil can persist for hours or days and be mortal.

  • Idiopathic
  • High fever
  • Brain infections (malaria, meningitis, anger, AIDS, tetanus, encephalopathies)
  • Metabolic disorders (hypoparathyroidism, low sugar levels, renal and liver failure)
  • Oxygen insufficiency in the brain
  • Destruction of brain tissue (tumors, hemorrhages, traumatic lesions)
  • Other diseases (eclampsia, lupus, hypertensive encephalopathy)
